Production & Tech Manager Employment Listing

OVERVIEW:

- Manage all aspects of show builds from a provided elevation and design specs guiding a team of volunteer builders (most of whom are former engineers)
- Work with BT leadership to stick to the theater schedule for performances, auditions, classes, and rehearsals
- Maintain the organization, safety, and cleanliness of the backstage area
- Manage the technical direction of all productions & special events
- Manage & maintain all theatre-owned technical equipment
- Perform production related administrative responsibilities
- Schedule: daytime with necessary night and weekend flexibility; average of 25 hours/week (up to 30 hours/week during tech)
- Compensation: Pay will be hourly and commensurate with experience (min. $20/hour)

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

REQUIRED: Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre Arts or 3+ years experience in theatre tech; experience with video and sound monitors; ability to lift 50 lbs; ability to climb a ladder; strong attention to detail; ability to meet deadlines; must be a collaborative team player; must also be self-sufficient and show initiative
DESIRED: electronics experience ; experience with sound and/or lighting design; experience with ETC systems/consoles; experience managing a team; ability to understand spreadsheets and manage budgets

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

SHOW BUILDS:
- Oversee the building of sets in our space
~ 4-6 weeks of build time between productions; builds happen on stage during weekday business hours (usually 11am-3pm)
- Manage a team of 2-3 volunteer builders
- Help to set budget for each show and keep an eye on spending for each production/build
- Maintain a safe environment for all artists working in the theater
- Use downtime on smaller builds to plan seasonal cleaning, organizing, & special projects

TECHNICAL DIRECTION OF PRODUCTIONS:
- As the resident technical expert, the Production & Tech Manager is expected to be available to assist designers and directors during tech wherever necessary (must attend at least 2 tech week rehearsals per production)
- Attend designer run, take notes, and ask/answer questions as necessary
- Check rehearsal and performance reports daily, respond to show communication within 24 hours, and resolve safety/set/tech concerns before the following rehearsal or show
- Provide sound cues for all plays (work with sound designers for musicals)
- Assist with problem-solving on special projects/props/furniture/set pieces

EQUIPMENT MANAGEMENT:
- Manage maintenance and repairs of all theater-owned equipment and electronics with BT leadership
- Do seasonal inventory on general production materials and replenish as necessary
- Plan yearly/seasonal organizational days to ensure proper organization and maintenance of backstage materials; dispose of or recycle outdated/unused materials when necessary

ADMINISTRATIVE:
- Manage scheduling of production meetings for each show
- Manage organizing of summer tech interns
- Attend required monthly staff meetings on the final Tuesday of each month (during normal hours)
- Work with BT leadership to plan and manage tech setups for special events
- Keep all business receipts (print or forward where necessary); itemize and record all expenditures in the receipt log
